The #1 Online Mistake

Updated: May 25, 2020

And how you can fix it

The emergence of social media has allowed brands to reach their audiences in a whole new way, but the success of your online presence isn't always guaranteed. Distracted between navigating the algorithm and creating eye-catching content, many businesses fail to connect to their audience on an emotional level.

These days consumers are facing information overload and have automatically begun to tune out information that doesn't connect with them. As a result, businesses that aren't top of mind often fall between the online cracks.

In order to avoid getting lost in the crowd you need to create an experience online that showcases what makes you unique; you need to connect to your audience on an emotional level, beyond selling products. This is no easy task and ultimately takes more effort than snapping a picture and coming up with a snazzy caption.

The first step involves analyzing your current social presence and determining your ideal presence to understand where the gaps may be. Gaps can occur in a multitude of places, but that doesn't mean they are always complicated to fix. Sometimes the solution is as simple as updating your hashtags, other times it can involve a whole online facelift. The hardest part is often deciding where your biggest gaps are, but there's a simple question you can ask yourself when evaluating: is my message consistent?

It is one thing to know and understand your business on a personal level, but it can be a completely different experience to view your business from an outside perspective. Are you sharing content that relates to your values and beliefs? Is your message clear to someone that may stumble upon your page by accident? Do your followers actively engage with your content because they're genuinely interested in it? If you answered 'no' to any of these questions it may be time to re-evaluate and update your social media presence.
